Land Based Education

Welcome to Land Based Education!

Land-Based Education is an educational approach that integrates the natural environment and Indigenous ways of knowing into the learning process. Rooted in the belief that the land itself is a teacher, this method emphasizes experiential learning and the interconnection between the environment, culture, and community.

Key aspects of Land-Based Education include:

  1. Experiential Learning: Students engage directly with the land through activities like gardening, foraging, and traditional ecological practices. This hands-on approach helps students develop practical skills and a deeper appreciation for nature.
  2. Cultural Relevance: Indigenous knowledge and traditions are central to the curriculum, fostering a sense of identity and continuity among Indigenous students while promoting cultural awareness and respect among all students.
  3. Community Involvement: Learning is often community-centered, involving local Elders, knowledge keepers, and community members as educators. This builds strong community ties and supports the transfer of knowledge across generations.
  4. Environmental Stewardship: Students learn about sustainability and conservation, understanding their role in protecting and preserving the environment for future generations.
